One of Dr. Leaf’s recent questions was – where do hollies come from?  The Ilex family is found all over the world on every continent except Antarctica.  There are 780+ evergreen species and 30+ deciduous ones.  Fossils indicate that many varieties of Ilex were found on the one single land mass which existed before the break-up into continents.
There are three main centers for Ilex.  The first is East Asia – 300 varieties come from Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, Myamar, and the Vietnamese peninsula.  The second center stretches from the southeastern USA through Mexico and into the northern regions of South America.  The third area is the Malay peninsula including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Pacific Islands.

Other areas with lots of Ilex include the Indian Himalayas, North America, and the Turkish-Iranian region.
