'Lassie'
Ilex x Koehneana
A volunteer seedling
discovered in McLean Nursery, Towson, MD, discovered and registered
by S.H. McLean |
Dark olive green leaves,
10cm/4in long, abundant vivid red berries, horizontal branches, zone 7
Koehne hollies, originally
discovered in northern Italy, are hybrids between English hollies and Lusterleaf
hollies. The leaves have the gloss of English holly but the shape
of Lusterleaf. They also gain the heat tolerance and drought tolerance
of the Lusterleafs. Other Koehne crosses such as 'Mary Nell' and
the new Red Hollies are related but do not have the same height, pyramidal
shape, or large leaves of 'Lassie.'
